Don't waste time trying to troubleshoot the following problems - email Mrs. Galster

You turn on your computer and a bomb shows up.
You turn on your computer and you get a question mark in the middle of your screen.

Computer Won't Turn On | Login Problems | email Problems | Printer Problems

Application Problems - Word and Safari | Problems Saving | Moving Files into your Folder

Computer won't turn on.

The computer does not turn on.

What to do - I know this sounds silly because you already did this but...

Check that the power cord is plugged securely into the back of the computer.

Check that the power cord is plugged securely into the surge protector and that
the surge protector is plugged in and turned on.

You might also want to check to see if other people in nearby rooms are
experiencing the same problem.
If they are it might be a circuit breaker.

Special emac instructions

If the machine that won't turn on is an emac and you don't want to wait for me to get over there, place it on a cart or a chair with wheels and drive it around the halls. Don't be gentle.

Plug it back in and try powering up again.

(I don't know why this works but if I take it for a ride in my car it will turn back on so try to recreate a car ride.) Maybe computers like going places?

If you have tried all of the very scientific instructions above and the computer is still not cooperating contact Mrs. Galster.

Login Problems

Shaking and Shuttering | AFP Server | Already Logged On | Folder Gone

My folder doesn't show up when I login.

What to do - Open the Macintosh HD and look to the left. Do you see a globe that says Network? Double click on the icon (picture).

Double click on XServer.

Double click on Volumes.

Double click on Staff_HD.

Scroll down to your folder and drag it to your dock.

That didn't work - If you are still having problems contact Mrs. G.

It says I am already logged in - You probably are already logged in.

What to do - If you had a computer crash when you were logged in and turned the
computer off and did not restart it the system may still believe that you are logged on. If you know this happened turn the culprit back on let it load up and then try the computer you want to be on again.

If this is not helping contact Mrs. G.

I am getting a message that my folder is on an AFP server and to contact the administrator.

What to do - Try shutting your computer all the way down (don't just log out).

Wait 20 to 30 seconds.

Turn the computer back on and try to log in again.

If you get the same message contact Mrs. G.

When I try to log in my computer shakes and shutters.

What to do -
The first thing you want to check is that the ethernet wire is plugged
into your computer and also plugged into the drop on the wall or the gray hub (the square thing with the pretty green lights and all kinds of ethernet wires plugged into it).

You might also try shutting down your computer and trying again.

email Questions and Problems
Quota full | Deleting email | ListServer | Attachments | Password

I am getting a message quota full.
You have exceeded the memory allotment that Hamilton County provides us.
(You have way too much mail.)

What to do - The first thing you need to do is press Confirm Alerts.

You are now in your regular email account and you need to start getting rid of some stuff.
Many people believe that if they only have 12 or so items in their IN box that they are ok but,
attachments (especially picture attachments) take up more space than regular mail.

Deleting email - If there are emails in your Inbox, your Sent Items or Spam(or any other folder you use) that you don't need get rid of them.

To get rid of email click on the box to the left of all the items you want to delete.

Scroll down and click the Set button.

A red x now appears on all of those items.

Scroll down and click Purge Deleted. (If you have changed your delete settings
you don't need me to tell you how to delete).

You might want to first get rid of the Spam mail since you don't need to open or go through it.Spam suggests that it is pretty much garbage.

On the Folders window choose Spam.

At the top left of the window that opens there you will see italisized words that read ex. 0 of 0 unread.
Of course yours might read 356 of 356 unread. It depends on how often you empty this folder.

If you have tons (more than 20) items ex. 28 of 28 unread or ex. 0 of 28 unread then click on the down arrow
next to the 20 (circled in red) and choose a number larger than the number of items you have.Next click on Display (circled in red).

Now click on Mark All (circled in red) and then scroll down and set.

When all of the red x's show up scroll down and Purge Deleted.

If you had 20 or less items you can simply click Mark all and proceed with the directions.

I would next move to the Sent Items.

Mark all of the items you need to get rid of (see directions above) and delete them.

Continue the process with your InBox. This may take more time since there are probably items that you want to keep.

Get rid of what you can by following the directions above.

If you have pictures that you want to save (school related of course) save them to your folder.
Once the pictures are in your folder it is safe to delete the email.

If you have pictures that someone emailed you and they are home use, you might want to open
them at home save them to a folder on your computer and then delete the email.

Make a New School Year Resolution that you will clean up email once a week!

I no longer receive the district ListServe emails.
If your account has been too full to receive incoming mail and the listserve messages have bounced
back three or so times the listServe knocks you off. (ListServes don't mess around)

Once you have followed the directions on purging unwanted email (deleting) you will need to
resubscribe to the ListServe.

In your email account click on Mail.
In the To rectangle type in : elmwood-on@sbepschools.org
or stbernard-on@sbepschools.org
or highschool-on@sbepschools.org

You should instantly receive an email (confirmation email) from the administrator. You need to
open this email,
click reply and then click send.

You should instantly receive another email (welcome) from the administrator. You can throw
both of these away.
You are now back to being a subscriber.

If you do not get a welcome message try again or call Mrs. G.

Printer Problems

Crayons to Computers | Nothing Prints | Printer Name Disappeared | Choosing Printer on OS X |
Choosing Printer on OS 9

I received a printer from Crayons to Computers or some other business can
you make it work on our system?

Probably not.

Printers are usually discarded for a reason.  Rarely is it because they have been
working fantastically.  Also most businesses and other school districts have windows machines.

Not all printers that are compatible with Windows are compatible with Mac.

Even though a printer is an HP and looks like the one that is down the hall doesn’t mean that it will work
with a Macintosh Computer.

You also need to remember that you need to have all of the cables etc. to connect to our computer.

Best rule – Don’t pick up a computer from somewhere else unless you have researched the compatibility.

I keep printing and printing and it looks like it works but nothing is
coming out of my printer.

Check to make sure that you are sending the information to your printer .

When you choose print take the time to look at the top of the window that pops up to see
that the printer named is yours.

If the wrong printer is chosen there is usually a drop down menu that will have your computer listed.

Choose your printer and try again.

That did not work - read on

My printer seems to have disappeared off  the list of printers.

Check to make sure that your printer is turned on and that all wires are connected.
